Migrating your server to RMDCGames: the complete guide
21 août 2026
Switching hosts is scary — rightly so, a lost world can't be redone. Here's the complete procedure to migrate an existing server to RMDCGames without losing anything along the way.
1. Prepare a full backup from your current host
Before anything else, export a complete archive of your server folder: the world (typically one or more world folders), the plugins ormods folder with their configs, and the server.properties file. Don't rely solely on an automatic backup from your old host if you plan to cancel quickly — download a copy locally.
2. Recreate an identical environment
Note precisely the Minecraft version and server software used (see our article onchoosing between Paper, Fabric, Forge…) — even a slightly different version can corrupt certain world structures or make some blocks incompatible. Create your RMDCGames server with the exact same version before transferring anything.
3. Transfer the files
Via SFTP (see SFTP, FTP, panel) or direct upload from the panel: clear the new server's folder, then drop in the contents of your backup. For large worlds (several GB), prefer a single .zip archive over hundreds of small files — the upload is noticeably faster.
4. Verify before shutting down the old one
Start the RMDCGames server and test it internally (whitelist enabled, without announcing the IP to your community): the world loads correctly, plugins or mods work, player permissions and ranks are preserved. Only cancel your old hosting once this check is done.
5. Switch DNS last, if you have a custom domain
If your community connects via a domain name rather than a raw IP, update the DNS record last, once everything is verified — see custom domain. Propagation can take up to a few hours depending on your registrar; keep the old server running during that window so your fastest players don't lose access.
