Which Minecraft version should you run your server on?

Every major release brings the same question: should you move to the newest version right away? For a single-player world, yes, no risk. For a server running plugins or mods, the answer is almost always "not yet".

Why the newest version is rarely right on release day

The server platform, the plugins and the mods are three separate ecosystems moving at different speeds. When a version ships:

  • server platforms (Paper, Purpur, Fabric, Forge, NeoForge) publish a compatible build within days to weeks;
  • plugins and mods follow, each on its own schedule, some never;
  • modpacks come last, because they wait for all of their mods to be updated.

A server updated too early therefore runs a version half of its own content doesn't support yet.

The real question: what does your server depend on?

List what would break the game if it stopped working: the claims plugin, the economy, the whole modpack. That list — not the version number — decides your migration date. A vanilla server can move on day one; a server with fifteen plugins waits for the last of them.

The platform matters a lot too: our Paper / Purpur / Fabric / Forge / NeoForge comparison covers what each one implies for compatibility.

Test before migrating, not after

Migration is prepared on a copy, never on the server people are playing on:

  1. take a full backup and confirm it's usable;
  2. stand up a second server on the new version with a copy of the world;
  3. add plugins one at a time, starting the server in between;
  4. only move players once the whole list works.

World versions don't go backwards: once a world has been opened in a newer version, downgrading isn't a supported operation. Hence the backup first — and knowing how to use it.

What about the players?

A client that's too new won't join an older server, and vice versa. Announce the target version and the date in advance: that's half the "I can't connect any more" messages gone.

The version is chosen when the server is created and can be changed later from the panel — see the getting-started guide or the FAQ.
