Changing software or version
Your server software and Minecraft version can be changed at any time from the client area, without opening a ticket.
Available software
- Paper, Purpur and Folia: optimised plugin servers.
- Spigot and Vanilla: the original plugin server, and Mojang's official server.
- Fabric, Forge and NeoForge: mod servers.
Versions range from the very latest down to 1.8.8 depending on the software; the screen only offers combinations we have checked. Not sure? Read Paper, Purpur, Fabric, Forge or NeoForge and which Minecraft version to choose.
Changing software or version
- Create a backup from the Backups tab (see backups).
- Open Settings → the Software and version block.
- Pick the software, then the Minecraft version.
- Click Change software or version and type the server name to confirm.
- Follow the installation in the console: the server is usually unavailable for one to two minutes.
The right Java version is set automatically: there is nothing to adjust.
What the change affects
- The server is reinstalled: the
.jarfile is replaced. - The software's configuration files may be rewritten (
server.properties,eula.txt,libraries/…). - Your plugins and mods are not converted: plugins only run on Paper, Purpur, Folia or Spigot, and mods only on the loader they were written for (see plugins and modpacks).
- A world opened in a newer version won't reopen cleanly in an older one: to go back down, start again from the backup made before upgrading.
Players' IP addresses
Paper, Purpur and Folia see each player's real IP address. Vanilla, Spigot, Fabric, Forge and NeoForge only see our proxy's: IP bans, anti-cheat and connection logs can no longer tell your players apart. The screen warns you before you confirm.
Reinstalling without changing anything
The Reinstall the server block, further down in Settings, replays the installation of the current software — useful after a manual change to the startup variables. Same consequences, same advice: back up first.
If the change is refused
A suspended server, or one already installing or restoring, cannot change software: pay the pending invoice, or try again a few minutes later. If the installation fails, open a ticket from Support: we will unblock it.
